The Northeast Region of Michigan
The Northeastern Region of Michigan is considered to begin on the northeast coast of Lake Huron. This area is found within Mackinaw City and it includes many great places to live, as well as popular tourist destination spots.
The region is called the “Sunrise Side” of Michigan, and activities to do include exploring Mackinac Island State Park (the first of Michigan’s state parks!) as well as checking out Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary.
Fly fishing and golfing are great for those who love the outdoors in Northeastern Michigan, as both AuSable and Manistee fishing rivers are considered world-class. There are also 17 premier golf-courses in Gaylord alone, for those who prefer to have their fun on dry land.
Those who live in or visit this attractive area of Michigan can enjoy all that Northeast Michigan has to offer. While living in the moment, though, it is important to plan for your future- which means working with an estate planning and elder law attorney to keep updated plans in place to protect yourself and your family no matter what life throws at you.
The Thumb of Michigan
The Thumb is a region in Michigan that gets its name from the fact that Michigan’s Lower Peninsula resembles the shape of a mitten. The part of the “mitten” that looks like the thumb includes the Central Michigan region to the north of the Detroit metro area and to the east of the tri-cities. There is no formal list of counties in Michigan which are considered to be a part of the thumb, but Sanilac, Huron, and Tuscola are typically included within the Thumb’s area, as are Lapeer and St. Clair counties.
The Thumb has a long history as an agricultural area, with crops including corn, sugar beets, fruits and veggies, and navy beans. Because of the rich fertile soil, many farms are located in the Thumb.
Farm owners face unique estate planning challenges because much of their wealth is often tied up in the farmland they own. This creates problems if the value of farmland results in estate taxes being assessed that there is not cash to pay. An estate planning attorney can help residents of the Thumb to determine if this is likely to be a problem and, of so, can provide assistance in making a plan to protect land by reducing or avoiding taxes.
